Media Release - ATLAS #3 - Athletes looking to hit top form

Wednesday, 31 January 2018 | alinta

Date: Friday 2 February
Time: 6:30pm

This Friday night sees the third and final meet in Athletics Tasmania’s new series known as ATLAS. ATLAS #3 will be held at the Domain Athletics Centre starting at 6:30pm.

With just two weeks until the Commonwealth Games Selection Trials and Athletics Australia Open Championships athletes will be looking to hit top form in the hope of a good performance on the Gold Coast.

Hamish Peacock will be looking to continue his unbeaten series of performances throughout the summer in the hope of defending his Australian title and booking his spot at the Commonwealth Games in April.

The men’s and women’s 800m events will be a highlight of the night with strong fields in both races. North-West athlete Nicole Perry will be looking to complete a trifecta of ATLAS wins to boost her confidence ahead of competing at the Commonwealth Games selection trials. In the men’s race, a strong group of junior athletes will be looking to claim bragging rights against some experienced racers in Ben Covington and Nathan Morey, as well as Para world champion Deon Kenzie.

ATLAS #3 will also feature a new event on the athletics scene: the mixed 4x400m. First seen at last year’s Nitro Athletics in Melbourne the mixed men’s and women’s race is now an official event and will be a part of the program at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. ATLAS will be one of the first meets to hold the new race and so an Australian record may be up for grabs if the teams perform well on the night.

Athletics Tasmania have partnered with Orienteering Tasmania to bring the two sports closer together. A short orienteering event will be held prior to the track and field program and later in the evening an invitational mile will be run on the track. Both events are designed to give competitors in one sport the chance to try the other, and no doubt the competition will be fierce to see who can lay claim to the best distance runners.
