WHAT: ATLAS TRACK AND FIELD MEET #1
WHEN: 1st DECEMBER 2017, 7:00PM
WHERE: DOMAIN ATHLETICS CENTRE, HOBART

The competition to represent Australia in hammer throw at the Commonwealth Games will be fought out over the summer, culminating at the Australian Athletics Championships on the Gold Coast in February.

However, the first shots will be fired in Hobart at the upcoming ATLAS meet (Athletics Tasmania Local Athletics Series) on Friday December 1st 2017.

While older sibling Hamish is a near certainty to represent Australia in the Javelin at next year’s Commonwealth Games, Huw Peacock is facing a tough battle to join his brother and be selected in the Hammer Throw.

Given five Australian athletes having already thrown the Hammer beyond the qualifying standard, there is a possibility of team selectors filling all three available spots for the Games. Peacock, who is currently ranked second behind Queensland's Matt Denny, will be looking to consolidate his position at the first ATLAS meet.

In what will be an exciting new format of promoting local athletics, Huw will be competing against NSW hopefuls William Brown and Costa Kousparis. All three men have already recorded qualifying throws and will be eager to use ATLAS to demonstrate to Australian selectors that they can perform under pressure.

Peacock says having this first head-to-head competition at his home ground gives him an advantage to make the most of, but is expecting the visitors to perform well.

“There is a new circle up at the Domain Athletics Centre and it's fast, so hopefully Costa, Will and I can all push beyond our personal bests.”

Event Director Stuart Corney says that the ATLAS meets, hosted by Athletics Tasmania, are designed to give Tasmanian athletes the chance to showcase their talent and gain experience competing in front of a crowd.

“Huw competing against two other guys, all of whom are trying to gain selection in the Australian team, is exactly what ATLAS is about. Hopefully the local support can lift Huw and we will see him launch a few big throws.”

Athletics Tasmania will host three ATLAS meets over the summer, with the second meet on January 5th and the third one on February 2nd, just two weeks out from the Commonwealth Games qualifying meet.

Huw is a multiple medallist at the Australian Athletics Championships, including winning the bronze medal in the 2017 Australian Athletics Championships. Huw represented Australia at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
