TASSIE TRIO OF TEAMS INVITED TO ADELAIDE
WHAT: NATIONAL SCHOOLS KNOCKOUT FINAL
WHEN: 11th DECEMBER 2017
WHERE: ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Three Tasmanian schools athletics teams have been invited to Adelaide for the National Knockout Final in December.
Following the Tasmanian round of the Schools Knockout competition, held in conjunction with the 2017 Tasmanian All Schools, two teams from Latrobe High School and one team from St Patricks College Launceston get the chance to participate in the national final.
The final results for the weekend were:
Girls: (1st) St Patricks College Launceston, 7248pts; (2nd) Latrobe High Schools, 6116pts
Boys: (1st) Latrobe High School 8871pts.
The Schools Knockout competition offers a unique experience for participants that focuses on a team, points-based result from individual performances in a range of track and field events.
Head of Health and Physical Education at Latrobe High School, Aaron Humphrey , said despite the late call up the students were incredibly excited by the opportunity.
"Initially, we had five students entered in the individual competition," Humphrey said, "but following a frantic twenty or so phone calls, we managed to round up enough to fill a male and female team."
"This wouldn't have been possible without the input of the parents, who were a great support base over the weekend."
"The different format this year of Schools Knockout participants competing with the Tasmanian All Schools provided an eye-opening opportunity for a lot of our students who had previously only done school athletics carnivals."
Showing his support for his students on the sidelines, Humphrey said the experience was a positive one that will hopefully lead to an increase in participation in athletics in the state.
"One misconception out there is that often school students don't think that they're good enough to be competitive against those who train all the time or are trying out for state teams."
"This weekend showed that athletics is at a really exciting place in Tasmania for serious competitors, through to kids who want to have fun or develop fundamental skills for other sports."
Athletics Tasmania Executive Officer Gabby Steele was pleased that these vibrant groups of students get the opportunity to extend their enjoyment of athletics on the national stage.
"The team spirit, driven by both teachers of Latrobe and St Patricks, was very clear across the weekend and added an excitement to the competition."
"It is great for these students that they are now invited to travel as a team, and represent not only their school but Tasmania at the national final and we're looking forward to sharing their results."
The National Schools Knockout Final
will be held in Adelaide on Monday 11th December.
